VESCs have basically no restrictions on chargers that can be used.
The laws of physics however do require that the charger you use matches the voltage of your battery… therefore most battery “upgrades” require a new charger, unless your new battery still has the same voltage.
Charge voltage
Make sure it matches…
Charge current
Pick what’s right for you, you can charge as high as you want (some people do 10A+) as long as you make sure that all components in the chain support those high currents:
- BMS (most get too hot above 8A)
- Wiring
- Connectors (e.g. Pint BMS connectors get damaged at 3A+)
If you don’t know what your setup can handle usually 5-6A is always supported (excluding Pint).
This is especially true for GTS/XL - those can easily handle 6A charging even if FM’s expensive “Hypercharger” charges at a pathetic 3.5A… the BMS, connector, and wiring do support 6A+
FM Chargers
All FM chargers work perfectly. They are expensive, but they pretty much are the only fanless chargers on the market. No reason not to keep using them.
FM sells the necessary charger plug adapter if you want to use your GT charger on your 18s VESC: GT Charge Port - Onewheel // Future Motion
Fixed Voltage Chargers
All kinds of cheap fixed voltage chargers are available, on Amazon, or cheaper on AliExpress. Make sure you get the correct charger plug, or get an XT60 and then an adapter to your charge port.

Variable Chargers
Some chargers are fixed voltage and variable amps, one very popular model is the Omni/Battis/Roger charger.
Careful! V1 Omni charger is DANGEROUS!! There’s one variable charger out there that should be avoided - the original Omni charger / Roger charger without voltage presets likes to destroy BMS’s and Charge ports. It sparks when you connect because it has no protection for inrush current…
The ones with the 4 ports work great on the other hand.
